In verses 12-14, Luke tells us what the apostles were doing while they waited. Zechariah's prophecy in chapter 14 shows that Christ will, on that day, set foot on the Mount of Olives. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Many Christian denominations provide a special liturgy for this holy celebration. Finally, verses 15-26 are the account of the selection of Matthias as the twelfth apostle, a replacement for Judas. These are the ones who are not defiled with women, they are virgins, spiritual virgins. 11 Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time! Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand. Go, therefore, make disciples of nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded, and lo, I am with you, always, even to the end of the age.'" Between the Easter and Pentecost, there's a span of 50 days. But the Holy Spirit enabled Paul to see what this false prophet was doing and prompted him to pronounce a curse on Bar-Jesus. What we are seeing here is again, the power of the Word of God. A violent wind sounds. No lots were cast here, nor did they need to be. There is a theme which dominates the 40-day period between the resurrection and ascension of our Lord. It is the day, 40 days after the Resurrection, when Jesus returns to his Father. Maybe a few more decided to go to Jerusalem on Pentecost to see what was going on, and the town was bursting at the seams, and from all these nations that we're told about here and areas. It was a gentle rebuke, if a rebuke at all. Second, we learn that the Great Commission, which our Lord commanded His apostles, was given through the Holy Spirit (1:2). Thus, whether it was the selection of leaders or making important doctrinal distinctions, the Holy Spirit played a key role from Pentecost on.
